Quick Slants

It's been too long.

If it wasn't already official enough, Steve Spurrier is starting to gather his staff. He's retaining at least three South Carolina coaches, including the recruiting coordinator (a smart move considering he doesn't know the area and hates recruiting). He also has brought his son Steve Jr. over from Arizona. The difference between that and Lou hiring Skip Holtz and Bobby hiring Jeff Bowden is that Steve Jr. will only be receivers coach and not offensive coordinator. After all, everyone knows which Steve Spurrier likes calling plays.

After Texas' win over Texas A&M, it meant that Boise State would not be going to a BCS bowl. In fact, Georgia even jumped them in the BCS rankings. It makes sense, really, since the Broncos have a defense that is shaky at best and doesn't always show up week to week. Instead they will be playing New Year's Eve in the Liberty Bowl against Louisville. That should be the most exciting (or at least explosive) bowl of the year, national title game included.

It may be the end of an era for the Bucs. Mired in a slump, Martin Gramatica may be getting replaced as Tampa Bay's kicker. he was shaky last year, and after starting this year 9-of-10, he's back to inconsistency. A team is bound to look for other options when a guy misses 3 field goal attempts in a 7-point loss. His work in the Super Bowl year is probably the only reason why he hasn't already been replaced.
